Opening its doors in 1989, when the Balearic spirit was infecting the UK, its development has mirrored that of the island, growing in stature each year, reinventing itself in the face of adversity and stacking up the strongest line-ups possible for generation after generation of rave pilgrims to experience.

Its Sunday daytime carry-ons might now be the stuff of legend thanks to Ibiza's change in licensing laws, and the planes flying over it hidden from view by the addition of a roof, but Space has adapted with the times, ensuring that its after-dark thrills still set the standard for others to try and beat.

Custom built Funktion One sound is de rigueur, as are circus performers, ice cannons, lasers and lysergic LED screen projections. But what money can't buy is the atmosphere generated in its rooms.

With the likes of Carl Cox and Richie Hawtin residents at the club, the Terrace funnels clubbers from its balconied sides into the seething dancefloor in the middle, a whirling mass from which it's impossible to escape until the lights are turned up and the nearby beach beckons.

The Discoteca, meanwhile, is on an even grander scale, the entire wall beneath the DJ booth a body pumping wall of sound. And that's not even mentioning the Sunset Terrace, Premier Etage and El Salon, intimate counterpoints to hear deeper, more experimental talent. Web: spaceibiza.com
